課程概述

The purpose of this independent study is to enable the student to become familiar with, and then to critically engage with, recent developments in the emerging field of feminism and modern American novels, especially Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. We will review theories of gender and culture, and criticisms about Edith Wharton and her works. Starting from surveys of Wharton herself and descriptions of women in her novels, we seek to ask if there is any relationship between them. Besides, we will focus on criticisms in The Age of Innocence, in which the background, culture and characters are deeply examined.

課程目標
This course aims to provide historical and theoretical bases for the exploration and interpretation of women’s dilemma, awakening and breakthrough in Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. This course also covers essays from varied disciplines in order to inspire different perspectives while approaching literary works.
